About IFTA Tax Rates
IFTA tax rates are set by each individual state or province and can change every quarter. The rates shown represent the diesel and gasoline fuel tax rates used to calculate your IFTA quarterly tax liability. Pennsylvania consistently has the highest diesel rate in the US at $0.741 per gallon, while Mississippi has the lowest at $0.180 per gallon.
Four states impose additional surcharges: Kentucky (2.0¢/gal), Virginia (6.5¢/gal), New York (0.95¢/gal), and New Mexico (1.0¢/gal). These surcharges are unique because they are calculated on total taxable gallons driven in that state — not net taxable gallons — meaning they are always owed and never generate credits, even if you purchased more fuel there than you consumed.
Oregon is the only IFTA jurisdiction with a $0.00 fuel tax rate. Oregon uses a weight-mile tax system instead. You must still report Oregon miles on your IFTA return but pay the Oregon weight-mile tax separately through the Oregon Department of Transportation.
